Roman roofing has always been inspired by the culture and architecture of the Roman empire, and representing and respecting that history is something that we believe is the right thing to do as Raleigh roofing contractors. Education is important for people to remember the many important historical events of that time period, and even today one of the most famous features of that history stands today. The Roman Colosseum is one of the most famous pieces of architecture of that time period. The history of the Colosseum is the first thing most people think of when this magnificently artistic and progressive time period is discussed. We want to inform and teach our customers about the history of the Colosseum, and efter educating we would want to take on the task of building a roof for the Colosseum if we could. Our Raleigh roofing company strives to educate our clients and have them feel comfortable with our Roman Roofers tackling their home projects.
Origin of the Colosseum
The Colosseum was commissioned to be built in the early A.D 70s by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty as a gift to the Roman people. The son of Vespasian, Titus, opened the Colosseum in 80 A.D and opened with 100 days of games in honor of the opening. Games like gladiatorial combat, wild animal fights, and other forms of entertainment were part of the 100 days of games. The Colosseum saw many battles for over a hundred years, until a fire struck the amphitheater in 217 A.D, damaging the Colosseum and burning down the wooden upper level. In the mid 5th century, the last known reports of gladiatorial combat was recorded, and the Colosseum began to degrade overtime,it wasn’t until the 19th century that restoration and reconstruction projects began. Now the Colosseum is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Italy, and the oldest preserved structure of history in the world.
Our Colosseum Concept
The Colosseum is a structure primarily made up of stone and concrete, during a time in history they had wooden platforms for interior pieces like balconies. Some historians believed that the Romans were able to build latrines and drinking water fountains. Romans were of the first in history to develop waterway systems. The Colosseum actually had a roof at one point in history, but instead of it being a concrete dome, the incredibly massive opening in the amphitheater was covered with movable fabric roofs, to protect spectators that sat in marble seats from the hot Italian sun.
If we were constructed to build the roof of the famous Colosseum, our Raleigh roofing company would commit to the clay/concrete and use that as the roofing material. We would build a dome to encompass the covering of the dome while taking advantage of the arches that are used in the siding of the building. The siding of the building uses arches across the surrounding of the siding, and we would incorporate this in the dome of the roof. Developing arches at the points where the siding and the dome meet to create openings in the dome for natural light that will point to the direct center of the Colosseum. We would also incorporate a gutter system that would lead rain and other debris to the parts of the roof that are not exposed to the arches to lead off the Colosseum.
